First Expressions of Self-Government
Read the Mayflower Compact and the Fundamental Orders of Connecticut. Following the Supplemental Reading Instructions presented in class, answer the following questions in complete sentences in your spiral:

  1. What is the Mayflower Compact about; that is, what is the main idea of the document?
  2. What is the Compact’s background? In other words, who wrote it and why? When and where was it written?
  3. A constitution is “a document defining and limiting the functions of government.” Was the Compact, as is often claimed, the first American constitution? Why or why not?
  4. In what ways did the Compact foreshadow the development of democratic institutions?
  5. What is the Fundamental Orders of Connecticut about; that is, what is the main idea of the document?
  6. What is the Orders’ background? In other words, who wrote it and why? When and where was it written?
  7. It is significant that no mention is made of the king in this document. Do you think this was an oversight? If not, why do you suppose the document failed to give specific power to the king of England?
  8. What aspects of the Orders do you believe to be consistent with our current constitution?
  9. In what way(s) do these documents reflect Enlightenment philosophy?
  10. What did these documents change? In other words, what is the significance of these documents?

Slavery Compared Activity
Upon completion of the reading, create a Venn diagram illustrating the similarities and differences between African slavery in British North America and in Latin America. Using the information contained in the diagram, write a 3-5 sentence conclusion.


Unit 1 Essay
The purpose of writing this first essay is to become familiar with the style and format of essays in this class. Using the guidelines provided in class answer the following question:

Compare and contrast the northern colonies with the southern colonies.

  • The essay must be typed and approximately 2 pages in length.
  • The essay should be formatted as follows:
  1. 1 inch margins
  2. Arial or Times New Roman size 12 font
  3. Double spaced
  4. The title, your name, class period, and the date should appear on a separate title page
  5. The title should be in all caps, centered on the title page, approximately 1/3 of the page down from the top of the page
  6. Your name, class period, and the due date should appear on the title page, single spaced, approximately 1/3 of the page up from the bottom of the page
  7. Page numbers should be centered at the bottom of each page except the title page which should not be numbered
  • Proofread the essay very carefully - spelling and grammatical errors will detract from the overall grade.
